Equitable access to water is a key factor for health, dignity and development, and this year's World Water Day theme - "2026 Water and Gender" under the slogan "Where Water Flows, Equality Grows" - highlights the importance of a responsible and inclusive water resource management, authorities in the area conveyed on the occasion of the day.
"Water is the foundation of life and development. It is a limited resource that we cannot replace," Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests Diana Buzoianu said according to a post on the Facebook page of the National Administration "Apele Romane" (Romanian Waters) - ANAR.
According to the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), "water is the great equaliser - it knows no borders and gender differences should not either."
In his turn, ANAR Director General Doru-Dragos Cazan pointed out that water is essential for life, health, economic development and ecosystem balance.
The main event for the World Water Day was held on Friday, 20 March, in collaboration with the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) and the Arges-Vedea River Basin Administration. On this occasion, modern intervention equipment and advanced technologies for monitoring the behaviour of hydrotechnical works were presented, providing important solutions for community safety and adaptation to climate change.
At the same time, in collaboration with the INHGA and the River Basin Administrations, the campaign "Her and Water" is being carried out, dedicated to promoting women in the water management area.
Moreover, for the fourth consecutive year, educational events are being organised in partnership with the Bucharest City Hall and the "Grigore Antipa" National Museum of Natural History for primary school pupils, aimed at raising awareness of the importance of water resources and environmental protection.
The World Water Day is marked annually on 22 March and was established by the United Nations to draw attention to the importance of safe drinking water and the sustainable management of water resources.
