The search and rescue team RO-USAR 01 is participating, between October 23-26, with 52 specialists in emergency interventions in the EU Modex Austria exercise, organized at Tritolwerk.
"The exercise is organized within the European Civil Protection Mechanism of the European Union by an international consortium and aims to train international search and rescue modules (USAR) in complex scenarios generated by the occurrence of a major earthquake", informs a press release from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
During the four days, the team from Romania will provide international assistance in support of local authorities for the search and rescue of people caught under the rubble, their unblocking, evacuation and emergency medical assistance.
"Romania's civil protection capabilities, intended for international missions, are autonomous and benefit from high-performance equipment with the help of which they can intervene promptly alongside other teams in the world. In the event of a disaster, rescuers' missions to help fellow citizens in need go beyond the borders of a country", the cited source shows.
The RO-USAR team intervened in Albania in 2019 and at the beginning of this year in Turkey to rescue people caught in the wake of the earthquakes that affected those countries.
Rescuers are able to carry out missions to manage the aftermath of a major earthquake, being specialized in interventions to extract people from environments hostile to life, actions to create breaches in concrete or brick constructive elements, supporting constructive elements that threaten to collapse, lifting and moving the construction elements that imprison the victims.
"At the request of the international assistance of the affected countries, IGSU can send specialized modules or teams for urban search-rescue, medical, CBRN, for pumping large amounts of water during floods and rescue with the help of boats. The modules act according to international procedures and standards (UN and EU)", states IGSU.
Romania has both granted and benefited from international support, Romanian firefighters being able to cooperate, according to international procedures, with rescuers from all over the world.
