The Parliaments of Romania and Moldova must come up with a new approach towards a closer partnership to support the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU, respectively with a new Snagov Pact, Moldova's ambassador to Bucharest, Victor Chirila, said on Thursday.
According to the diplomat, the opportunity of Moldova's European integration was, until recently, rather in the field of intentions or plans, but by officially requesting to obtain the status of candidate and by handing this questionnaire in Brussels by the European Commission to the Moldovan foreign minister, the Republic of Moldova initiated a process by which it hopes to obtain the status of candidate state in the nearest future.
"Our first objective, in this context, is to complete this questionnaire as soon as possible. I understand there are over 300 questions. We will need the support of Romania, of the experts from Romania who have been involved in the process of accession to the European Union, so that during the next month we will finalize this questionnaire at the highest level, in order to respond concretely and as completely and as convincingly as possible to those questions. (...) I believe we need to think in a longer perspective, to have a vision for the future, a bolder and deeper one. (...) Therefore, I believe that our parliaments must come together, soon, with a new approach that will commit the two parliaments in a partnership that they have called a new Snagov Pact for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU," said Ambassador Chirila, at the meeting of the Joint Committee for European Integration between the Parliament of Romania and the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, which took place in the Bucharest Parliament, Agerpres.ro informs.
He added that the message of the two parliaments should be more stressing, much firmer, in order to grant the status of candidate state for the Republic of Moldova.
"The next message - let us ask together for the EU to grant us this status - as a candidate state - because this is the quintessence of the Republic of Moldova, after which our parliaments must think about the processes that follow. We will have to go through an important way, to face the negotiations on the 35 chapters that the EU will open, and this process involves the accelerated harmonization of our legislation with that of the EU and Romania has a rich experience in this regard. (...) I think our parliaments should now think about setting up working groups, of experts, so that we can now prepare for those negotiations. (...) This process must be completed in the next 5-6 years and, therefore, we must be very convincing, and our "weapon", our advantage is called Romania. Romania is our advantage that Georgia does not have, Ukraine does not have and we must capitalize on this advantage," stressed Victor Chirila, who believes that strategic projects should be implemented, such as the Ungheni Bridge.
