The Bucharest-Baku and return direct flights are a dream come true and they mean a project that will round up two other initiatives that Romania and Azerbaijan are working on, namely the delivery of green energy and the creation of a transport corridor of general goods between Asia and Europe, through the Port of Constanta, Romania's ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasile Soare told the launching conference of Baku - Bucharest flights from the Henri Coanda International Airport.
"A direct flight to Romania, to me as an ambassador, is a dream that comes true today, in my third year in Baku, because this moment is rounding up our immeasurable efforts to strengthen the Romanian-Azerbaijani relationships. Since 2009, Romania has been the first country in the European Union to propose to Azerbaijan to promote relations to strategic partnership. Today, I see this moment of the first direct flight as the first physical link between Azerbaijan and Romania. In 2023, we were breaking the ice, creating through an inter-institutional effort, a corridor through which natural gas from Azerbaijan reached Romania. In a moment of crisis, Azerbaijan extended a hand to us. On April 1, the President of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilhan Aliyev, who extended a hand to us even when Romania was in crisis and needed gas, understood very well our request to create this direct link. It is certain that today we have this first physical connection between Romania and Azerbaijan (...) The discussion was on April 1, and the decision on April 8 and today we have the flight from Bucharest," Soare said.
He added that the launch of the route between Bucharest and Baku is a project that will round up two other major projects on which the two countries are working.
"In the coming period, we are trying to bring green energy from Azerbaijan, through Georgia, through the Black Sea, the so-called submarine cable, which will go to Constanta and from there on through Hungary, for the European market. Romania has energy, but others around us may have less and we can help them. Azerbaijan has the greatest potential, after the North Sea, for wind energy. Another project we are working on is the creation of a transport corridor between Asia and Europe, via Baku, for general goods that will come from Asia en route to Europe. Baku and Constanta have from God, from Allah, this purpose to be true bridgeheads in these transport corridors, as I said energy and transport, and now air. I am convinced that this flight will boost cultural, educational, business exchanges. First of all, this connection solves an extremely complicated problem (...) From this moment on, we will avoid prolonged, tiring and even expensive transit. In just three hours, with 300 euros round trip you can reach the Caucasus. I think it will be an offer for Romanian tourists to choose Baku for an ideal extended city break. Just go and see and Azerbaijan will conquer you, just as Azerbaijanis will come to discover Romania, with its tourist potential, but also to choose Bucharest as a hub to other destinations, other European capitals," Soare said.
The Bucharest Airports National Corporation (CNAB) organised on Monday a conference for launching the Baku - Bucharest - Baku flight route at the Henri Coanda International Airport.
The first flight on the new section is scheduled for June 3, 2024. The subsequent frequency will be twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, with the journey taking three hours.
