Drug maker Antibiotice Iasi has already produced more than 15 million potassium iodide pills of the contracted amount of 30 million, Health Minister Alexandru Rafila told a news conference on Tuesday.
He said that the management of the inventory of potassium iodide tablets is regulated under a government decision and the best way is being sought to distribute the pills to the population should the administration of the radioprotective agent become necessary.
The Health Minister announced last week that with a maximum necessary amount of 30 million of potassium iodide pills, Antibiotice Iasi will put out 2.5 million pills every 48 hours.
Back then he pointed out that potassium iodide is no cure-all and is administered strictly as directed, for a limited amount of time.
