The USR is requesting the resignation of Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu, citing his statements according to which the Brussels authorities would condition European funding for Romania on observing the rule of law. "Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu is again pushing Romania away from the European Union, placing it on the same footing with Poland. The irresponsible statement that our country rejects Brussels' intention to make European funding conditional on observing the rule of law does not take into account the commitments which Romania has pledged before the European institutions once it joined the community space," USR leader Dan Barna write on Facebook on Friday.
Barna says this is a "new attack on multinational companies operating in Romania and that contribute to supporting the private environment by creating thousands of jobs." "Also, Mr. Melescanu seems to want to cultivate, in parallel, a nationalist philosophy in public consciousness, which would help in anti-EU rhetoric. Moreover, at this week's meeting with his Polish counterpart, Jacek Czaputowicz, Melescanu hinted that Romania will support Poland if the Council of the European Union adopts a decision under Article 7 of the EU Treaty, which provides for the suspension of Poland's voting rights due to the situation of the Polish judicial system.
We understand from here that Romania would like to be as Poland, to still receive European funds, but to continue to change the laws of justice without taking into account the numerous alarm signals received from foreign partners," Dan Barna said.
He points out that, according to article 11 paragraph 1 of the Constitution, the Romanian State "undertakes to fulfill in good faith the obligations incumbent upon it under the treaties to which it is a party".
Dan Barna adds that the Romanian people did not mandate the foreign minister to express this "anti-EU" position.
Connecting European funds to "other elements" would be "a gross breaching" of the principles of the European Union, Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu said on Thursday in a joint statement with his Polish counterpart Jacek Czaputowicz.
"In respect to connecting the funds to other elements, from my point of view, would be a gross breaching of not only the provisions, but also of the fundamental principles of the European Union, which have as fundamental objective solidarity and ensuring convergence among the economies of the member states," the Romanian foreign minister said in the joint press statement.
