The Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland decries the death of Ion Caramitru, of whom they say was one of the greatest Romanian actors, a harbinger of freedom for the entire country and supporter of the works of Shakespeare for a lifetime.

With a scenic speech that left the whole hall fascinated and stunned, Ion Caramitru interpreted the works of Shakespeare with effervescent passion, like a storm raging in the middle of a theater stage. We are honored that we have had the occasion to work closely with him and know Ion Caramitru the actor, the director, the leader, the one that was the model and mentor for dozens of generations of young actors and director, but also the man behind the stage, shows a post on the Facebook page of the Embassy.

In his long career over 50 years, he enjoyed appreciation from the public, culture and art lovers, those of his kind, as well as from cultural forums, both from Romania, as well as from abroad, the quoted source shows, Agerpres informs.

A storyteller in the fullness of the word, Ion Caramitru was, among others, a strong knot on the cultural ties between Romania and the United Kingdom, reason for which in 1995 he was decorated with the title Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2016, he was appointed Shakespeare Ambassador to Romania, during the anniversary programme "Shakespeare Lives", on the 400th anniversary since the death of the author, conducted by the British Council and GREAT Britain in the entire world, mentions the release of the British Embassy in Bucharest.

Ambassador Andrew Noble sends condolences on behalf of the British Government and recalls fondly the great actor.

I had the privilege of knowing Ion Caramitru for nearly 40 years, time in which I was witness to a great actor, director and leader of Romanian theater. But he was, also, a tireless fighter for democracy, as he showed in 1989 and as I found out from the memories he shared so fondly during the conference organized by the British Embassy, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Freedom. His interpretation of the monologue in Hamlet showed how political freedom always represented a priority in his path on the Romanian theater stage and will remain in our memory as a truly special moment, states the British diplomat.
