The statement sent on Tuesday by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service represents "the first public official intervention" by Moscow in support of a presidential candidate, and it should trigger a major alarm signal for the entire Romanian state, Bucharest General Mayor Nicusor Dan said in a reaction to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service's claim - also cited by news agency TASS - that the EU leaders are obviously behind the decision to bring charges against presidential candidate Calin Georgescu.
"Today, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service issued an official statement attacking the Romanian prosecutors who investigate Calin Georgescu. It is the first official public act by which Russia intervenes in support of a presidential candidate and an extremely important alarm signal for the entire Romanian state, the current heads of our institutions and the Romanian citizens. Here is how, in just a few months, those who organized the elections and those who manipulated them have brought us to a critical moment for our freedom, prosperity and democratic path. Romania needs a new leash of life and a president legitimized by vote, responsible and dedicated to European values," the Mayor wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
According to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Brussels is waging a war against the European leaders who openly support U.S. President Donald Trump.
"European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who played a key role in recognizing the results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania as invalid, called on the current authorities in Bucharest to bar Georgescu from participating in the second round in May. She warned that if this representative of 'non-systemic forces' continues his election campaign, the European Union will restrict access to its funds for Romania," the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service said, yet without providing evidence.
