Cigarettes worth nearly EUR 4,000,000 were discovered following an inspection of a container by border police from the Coast Guard, together with customs inspectors from the Constanta South Agigea Customs Office and officers from the Constanta Organised Crime Brigade.
According to the documentation, the container, which arrived from the United Arab Emirates, was supposed to contain paper rolls.
'This seizure is one of the most significant discoveries made by the Coast Guard this year and comes as a result of ongoing efforts to prevent and combat smuggling, carried out in Romanian seaports,' the Inspectorate General of the Border Police (IGPF) informed.
Border police are conducting investigations, under the coordination of a prosecutor from the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Constanta Court, for the offences of using false documents and smuggling.
At the conclusion of the investigation, the appropriate legal measures will be taken.
