The ConvEx-3 exercise marks a defining moment in strengthening the response capacity in nuclear and radiological emergency situations, Nuclearelectrica CEO Cosmin Ghita said on Tuesday at the launch conference of the ConvEx-3 (2025) International Exercise, a IAEA-organized top-complex emergency simulation exercise.

"This exercise represents a defining moment in strengthening our response capacity in nuclear and radiological emergency situations. I am very curious to see where the scenarios that you are going to implement will take us. We are testing and perfecting our response, cooperation and communication mechanisms that are key for protecting the population and the environment. As the operator of Romania's only nuclear power company, Nuclearelectrica has a major responsibility in ensuring nuclear safety and security. We are deeply committed to promoting a solid nuclear safety culture, in accordance with the highest international standards, and we have done so throughout the years," said Ghita.

He emphasized that nuclear energy will play an increasingly important role in ensuring a stable source of resilient energy in the coming years.

"With Nuclearelectrica, we have managed top positions in terms of operational safety and performance. Our active participation in this exercise further reflects our firm commitment to transparency, defense, and continuous improvement. These are the key aspects of a nuclear security culture. In a global context marked by energy and climate challenges, nuclear energy will play an increasingly important role in ensuring a stable source of resilient energy, available 24/7, as seen in several incidents in previous years, including during the pandemic. Through our strategic projects such as the retrofitting of Unit 1, the construction of Units 3 and 4 at the Cernavoda NPP, the construction of SMR nuclear power plants, with the tritium removal facility that will help improve the radiological conditions on site and the production of medical isotopes, we aim to contribute significantly to Romania's decarbonization goals, to Romania and the region's energy security," said the head of Nuclearelectrica.

The National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN) organized on Tuesday the official launch event of the International Exercise ConvEx-3 (2025) which will take place June 24 - 25, and which is intended to test and improve the national and international response in the event of a major nuclear incident, as well as to strengthen cooperation between participating authorities, institutions and states.
