The Ilfov Court on Monday granted indicted former Constanta Mayor Radu Mazare a request for conditional release from Jilava Penitentiary, where he was serving a 9-year prison sentence received in 2019 in a case of illegal restitution of land and beaches in Constanta and Mamaia.
Initially, on April 17, the 4th District Court denied Mazare's request, but he won the case at the Ilfov Court.
Mazare was among the first "fugitives" of Romania. Finally convicted in February 2019, he left before sentencing, settling in Madagascar, where he invested in a tourist complex. He was extradited and brought to the country in May 2019 and then jailed.
The case in which Mazare received nine years in prison regards fraudulent restitution of large areas of built-up land in Constanta, Mamaia, beach and seafront, with the fraud put at EUR 114 million yet to be recovered.
Mazare also got a final sentence of five years in prison for bribery and conflict of interest in another case running concomitantly with the one in the restitution case.
