The minister of national defence, Ionut Mosteanu, on Monday stated that the National Defence Strategy aims for Romania to become the second military power on the eastern flank and a defence provider in the Black Sea area.

"The National Defence Strategy is important because it gives a direction for the coming years and a paradigm shift compared to the last strategy presented by the former president. (...) A fundamentally different point of view is that we are no longer a defence consumer, we are a supplier or we want to become a defence supplier in the Black Sea area and the ambition that the president sets in this Strategy is for our country to become the second military power on the eastern flank, after Poland, which is absolutely reasonable, we can achieve this and we can do this, we are on the right track, the important thing is not to miss some moments and some opportunities," Ionut Mosteanu told Digi24 private television broadcaster on Monday evening, agerpres reports.

He added that the population needs to accept the increase in defence spending in the coming years.

We made this decision understanding the new imperatives and new security challenges, understanding that for years we have not invested enough as we should have in our own defence," said the defence minister.

The joint standing bureaus of Parliament took note, on Monday evening, of the National Defence Strategy of Romania for the period 2025-2030. The document, which when the report should be submitted to Parliament for approval.
