DefMin Tilvar: Army is in full modernisation process, has already reached NATO standards in many dimensions
Defence Minister Angel Tilvar said on Wednesday that the army is in the process of modernisation and transformation and has already reached NATO standards "in many dimensions."
"At the moment, the Army is in the process of modernisation and transformation and has already reached NATO standards in many dimensions. The provision of a budget of 2% of the GDP since 2017 and the increase to 2.5% of the GDP this year have allowed the launch of ambitious programmes to endow the army with state-of-the-art technology and equipment," Tilvar said in a message on Romanian Army Day.
He also mentioned the efforts being made to improve the working conditions of National Defence Ministry (MApN) personnel.
"The army ensures, through the people who wear its uniform with honour, pride, patriotism and sense of duty, our security and defence, of all of us, and is the guarantor of a life lived in peace and freedom," said the Minister of Defence.
He brought to mind, on this anniversary, the sacrifice of Romanian heroes.
"On Romanian Army Day, we honour the sacrifice of those who fought and died on duty to free the country in the Second World War and we pay tribute to the Romanian heroes who gave their lives in the theatres of operations, but also to war veterans, active and retired military personnel and civilian personnel," said the Minister.
In this context, Angel Tilvar spoke about the security situation in the world, referring to the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel.
"Unfortunately, today the world is again facing a wave of violence, from neighbouring Ukraine to friendly Israel. The invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and the barbaric attacks by the terrorist group Hamas on civilians in Israel are blatant and unjustified violations of international humanitarian law. In such troubled times we must find ways to act together with our allies and partners to strengthen Romania's security and defence," said the dignitary.
As far as Romania is concerned, he showed that more than 5,000 soldiers from Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the United States of America deployed on Romanian territory are training together with the Romanian military, and thanks to this "we are better protected and defended."
"The participation of the Romanian military, in the last decades, in missions in theatres of operations under the command of the UN, the European Union or NATO has strengthened Romania's security profile abroad, demonstrating the seriousness with which our country assumes its commitments in the areas of security and defence," said Angel Tilvar.
