Deputy Prime Minister Ana Birchall had a series of meetings with representatives of the island states in the Southeast Pacific and Caribbean region, whom she presented to Romania's objectives with the United Nations Organisation, by promoting our country's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 mandate.

Discussions were occasioned by the Romanian official's participation in the high-level inter-regional meeting "SAMOA Pathway Midterm Review" held in Apia, Samoa, informs a release of the Government's Press Office on Thursday.

Ana Birchall hosted an working dinner, having as guests the permanent representatives to the UN of the island states, including Australia and New Zealand, which are the most influent in this part of the world.

"During the working dinner, they debated on the specific challenges facing the respective regions and security threats generated by the climate changes. On this occasion, the Romanian official conveyed Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila's message of support, for identifying and implementing some dialogue and partnership solutions, both at bilateral and inter-regional level, for managing these risks, taking into account that Romania will hold the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union (starting in January 2019) and our country' bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council," reads the release.

Deputy PM Birchall had a bilateral meeting with Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Dame Meg Taylor, whom she discussed with about the specific development needs of the island states in the region, as well as concrete modalities of strengthening cooperation within the multilateral formats of the UN system and support mechanisms managed at the European Union level.
