President Nicusor Dan said on Monday that the high level of distrust in the political class, 82%, expressed by Romanians in a recent sociological survey, reflects reality and is the result of many years of politics done in Romania "in a certain way", in which people saw that "many politicians entered politics for their personal interests, they saw corruption, they saw the inefficiency of state institutions".

"This figure is the result of many years of politics in Romania and politics done in a certain way, in which people have seen that many politicians have entered politics for their personal interests, not to solve people's problems, they have seen corruption, they have seen the inefficiency of state institutions and it is shocking, but it reflects reality", Nicusor Dan said on Antena 1 when asked how he comments on the results of a survey conducted by IPSOS-ANTENA, which reveals 82% distrust in the political class.

Asked about the fact that 65% of Romanians say they do not trust the current prime minister, and 74% do not trust the Government, the head of state commented that the percentage of trust given to the prime minister is reasonable, considering the times we are living in.

"Yes, but I would look at the positive, I saw the trust in the Government, 5 or 6%, the trust in the Prime Minister - 17%, which for the times we live in I think is a trust rate... Of course, everyone wants to have at least 50%. But, for the Romania we live in, with the shortcomings we have today, it is reasonable", explained Nicusor Dan.

About the degree of trust in the president: 65% 'no', 15% 'yes', he stated: "I look at the 30% who are neither 'yes' nor 'no'. And there are people who still credit the president, that is my interpretation, who are waiting to see what the president's results are in the problems they face, corruption, institutions, economy, even Justice".

"I think the finding is correct. What I mean is that, as I was saying earlier, things have been going in one direction for so long, at a certain pace, that to change this direction it takes time and you need to somehow get into their depth, because otherwise it's very... It's a system that, as I said, has worked for years in one way. It can work for another 10-20 years the same way. And then, to change people, laws, norms, who have all learned to work in a certain way, it takes an effort and that takes time. That's about all I can say at this point," the head of state said.

According to him, politicians must regain the trust of citizens through their actions.

"The very word trust is very well defined in the Romanian language. This trust means, simply, whether the person you ask me whether I trust or not does something for me or not, so that's the answer. People need to see that there are politicians, top politicians who work for them and, of course, we have an administrative structure in which both slowness, and corruption, and lack of correlation between different institutions have functioned for years and progress will be seen, which I am sure we will have, progress will be seen in small steps, slowly with each one. So, we have a problem - tax evasion, we will look at some figures, if in a year tax evasion decreases by 20%, that will be a reason to regain trust", indicated Nicusor Dan.

He mentioned that he did not have a discussion with the head of the Tax Authority, but he spoke with the minister of finance and found that at this level there is the will to solve the problem of insufficient tax collection.
