Electricity production from wind power plants up almost 40pct in January 2026

Electricity production from wind power plants totalled 696 million kWh in the first month of this year, up 39.8% compared with the same period in 2025, while solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations decreased 2%, amounting to 146.8 million kWh compared with January 2025, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Tuesday.

Hydropower plant production exceeded 1.179 billion kWh in January 2026, marking an increase of 35.3% compared with the same period in 2025. In nuclear power plants, production fell by 3.4% to 987.2 million kWh.

Production from thermal power plants stood at 1.917 billion kWh, up by 0.9% (17.7 million kWh).

In January 2026, domestic production totalled 1.407 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), down by 26,200 toe (-1.8%) compared with the corresponding period last year, while imports amounted to 1.374 million toe, up by 79,400 toe (+6.1%).

Primary energy resources increased by 1.9% in January 2026 to 2.78 million toe, while electricity resources rose by 3.9% to 6.36 billion kWh.

Final electricity consumption during this period was 4.651 billion kWh, 3.6% higher than in the period 1-31 January 2025.

According to INS data, final electricity consumption in the economy increased by 5.4%, while public lighting and household consumption decreased by 5.7% and 1.9% respectively.

Technological own consumption in networks and substations was 662.2 million kWh, up 26.7% (139.6 million kWh).

Electricity exports totalled 1.051 billion kWh, down 5.5% (61 million kWh).
