ForMin Comanescu meets UNWTO SecGen Rifai

Foreign Affairs Minister Lazar Comanescu received on Thursday Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO); it was an occasion to reaffirm the excellent cooperation between Romania and the specialized agency of the United Nations for the durable development of tourism on national, regional and global levels.

According to a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry to Agerpres, the top Romanian diplomat stressed the importance Romania attaches to promoting and supporting tourism as a part of its national strategy for sustainable economic development; he reasserted the interest in expanding Romania's participation in UNWTO programmes.

The two officials also emphasized the need of promoting the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development in 2017, to the benefit of the organisation and of its member states. Talks also covered challenges faced by the world tourism, such as terrorism, climate changes and natural disasters, which equally impact the ways used by the tourist system and the tourist attractions of inestimable cultural, natural and archaeological value, the release mentions.

The Secretary General paid a visit to Bucharest in the context of the UNWTO International Conference on Integrated Quality Management in Tourism Destinations: A Key to Competitiveness, on Thursday and Friday.
