Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu encouraged the Chisinau Government on Thursday to take all necessary steps to advance on the European path, underlining that there is no viable alternative for the democratic future of the Republic of Moldova.

"I firmly believe that there is no viable alternative for the democratic future of the Republic of Moldova than the European path, so I encourage the Moldovan Government to take all necessary steps to advance on the European path and implement the reforms on the basis of the Association Agreement with the EU, including by carrying out the necessary actions in view of the parliamentary elections in February 2019, so as to ensure the highest democratic standards in the electoral process," Minister Teodor Melescanu affirmed.

According to a press release issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) sent to AGERPRES, Teodor Melescanu paid a visit to Chisinau on Thursday at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Tudor Ulianovschi, to attend the celebration of the Diplomacy Day in Moldova.

On this occasion, Melescanu conveyed a strong message of support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova, in line with the bilateral strategic partnership for its European integration, confirming Romania's interest in advancing the bilateral cooperation agenda in many areas of common interest.

"In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted the priority given to the promotion of the irreversible connection projects of the Republic of Moldova through Romania to the European space and the EU values, with emphasis on the interconnection projects in the fields of energy and infrastructure as well as in the field of education, health and culture, which have the real potential to generate direct benefits for the improvement of the life of all citizens of the Republic of Moldova. He also voiced Romania's interest in strengthening the Romanian investment presence in the Republic of Moldova," the MAE release states.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Melescanu assured that during the Presidency of the Council of the EU, all these elements will be among Romania's priorities and highlighted the priority given to the Eastern Partnership's consolidation in the context of the 10th anniversary since its launch and the fifth year from the liberalization of the visa regime for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the signing of the Association Agreement.

At the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs had a meeting in Chisinau with representatives of the pro-European democratic opposition, on which occasion he reiterated Romania's strategic priority of supporting the pro-European and democratic future of the Republic of Moldova, highlighting, from this perspective, Romania's willingness and interest in maintaining the dialogue with all political actors in the Republic of Moldova that support the European agenda.
