Romanian tennis player Gabriela Ruse on Monday qualified for the second round of the US Open tournament, the last Grand Slam of the year, which takes place at the Flushing Meadows arenas in New York, after defeating Austrian Julia Grabher, 6-2, 6-4.

Ruse (26 years old, 122 WTA), coming from the qualifications, needed only one hour and 12 minutes to pass Grabher (28 years old, 1,023 WTA).

The Romanian prevailed in all four confrontations against Grabher, equaling her best performance at the US Open (2022) and at a Grand Slam tournament (she also reached the second round at the Australian Open in 2022).

Ruse won 140,000 US dollars and 110 WTA points for reaching this far in the competition, and in the second round she will face Czech Barbora Krejcikova (28 years old, 8 WTA), who defeated Spanish Marina Bassols Ribera, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2.

Krejcikova won both encounters with the Russian so far, in 2019, in the first round in Bucharest, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, and in 2023, in Abu Dhabi, in the first round, 6-1, 6 -4.
