George Enescu Festival Square to open on Wednesday

Bucharest City's George Enescu Square will be turning into a space of classical music Wednesday through Sunday, with the opening of a new edition of the event Festival Square, organized by the Bucharest City Hall, through ARCUB - Cultural Centre of Bucharest, in co-production with ARTEXIM, inform Agerpres.

For five evenings, over a hundred renowned artists and prestigious orchestras will perform on the stages of George Enescu Square, such as: Alexandru Tomescu, Matei Ioachimescu, Damian Draghici, Horia Mihail, the Royal Camerata orchestra under the baton of conductor Constantin Grigore, George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra of Bucharest, conducted by maestro Tiberiu Soare, Operetta Stars, the Big Band Radio Romania orchestra, conducted by Simona Strungaru, and also recipients of the Young Talents fellowship programme supported by the Margareta Royal Foundation of Romania," ARCUB reported on Tuesday.

The playbill of the first evening will begin at 18:00hrs with an exceptional recital by the Young Talents fellowship recipients of the Royal Margareta Foundation of Romania, which includes works signed by the great universal composers - Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, George Enescu, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Darius Milhaud and Pedro Iturralde.

At 19:00hrs, the musical project "Origins" brings onstage a spectacular combination of rock, jazz and contemporary culture music, with the playbill featuring reinterpretations of legendary pieces from the repertoire of Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith and Guns N' Roses.

At 20:00hrs, violinist Alexandru Tomescu - on an Elder Voicu (1702) Stradivarius violin - and guitarist Dragos Ilie propose the "Rhapsodies" concert, a tribute to George Enescu, 70 years after his passing into eternity. The show brings together unpublished transcriptions for violin and classical guitar of the Romanian Rhapsodies Op. 11 and of the famous Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin.

On the evening of September 18, on the stage of the Festival Square, from 18:00hrs, recipients of the Young Talents fellowship programme of the Margareta Royal Foundation of Romania will play Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bach, Enescu, Milhaud and Pedro Iturralde, demonstrating the virtuosity and expressiveness of the new generation of artists.

At 19:00hrs, Damian Draghici (panpipes, vocals) and Sorin Romanescu (guitar) propose "The Atlas of Emotions", a sound journey through the universe of emotions, with the evening ending at 20:00hrs with "The Traveling Piano - 15 - Passion", a recital by pianist Horia Mihail, who will perform selections from the most beloved works of his anniversary tour.

Orchestral film music will be the motif of the evening of September 19, at a special concert to be staged by the Royal Camerata, under the baton of conductor Constantin Grigore, scheduled for 19:00hrs.

The public will be able to listen to suites and arrangements of famous works by Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer and other famous composers, in a show that combines cinematic emotion with the interpretative refinement of an orchestra.

On September 20, starting at 19:00hrs, the Festival Square will host a concert by the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra of Bucharest, conducted by maestro Tiberiu Soare, with the participation of soloists Veronica Anusca and George Virban.

The evening's repertoire includes operas, waltzes and famous works by composers such as Johann Strauss II, Charles Gounod, Georges Bizet, Franz Lehar, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Gioachino Rossini and many others.

The sixth edition of the Festival Square event will end on Sunday, September 21, with two exceptional events: at 18:00hrs - an Operetta Stars recital, and at 19:00hrs - the "The Magic of Funk" concert presented by Big Band Radio Romania, under the baton of conductor Simona Strungaru. Performing will be musician Berti Barbera and bassist Adrian Ciuplea.

For the entire duration of the event, visitors can also discover in George Enescu Square the exhibition on concerns and hobbies of the members of the Romanian Royal Family over time, which brings together 14 works made by young visual artists - recipients of the Young Talents fellowship programme of the Margareta Royal Foundation of Romania.

Admission to the Festival Square events is free, daily, between 18:00/19:00hrs - 21:00/21:30hrs in George Enescu Square.
