Police officers from the Giurgiu Territorial Inspectorate of the Border Police together with Bulgarian police officers detected, during a joint operation carried out on national road 5 (DN 5), two people of Afghan and Iraqi origin who were trying to illegally cross the border, the General Inspectorate of the Border Police informs on Tuesday.
The migrants were hidden in a specially arranged compartment in a bus.
The bus drivers, two Turkish citizens, are being held in preventive arrest for 30 days, as they are under investigation for migrant smuggling.
"On July 27, 2025, at around 2:20 am, as part of a Blitz-type action, the Giurgiu border police, in collaboration with the Bulgarian police, stopped on DN 5, for control, a bus registered in Turkey, which was traveling on the Turkey-Germany route. The bus was driven a Turkish citizen, accompanied by a backup driver. Following the inspection of the means of transport, in the drivers' rest compartment, the police identified a specially arranged place, where two male persons, aged 47 and 58, respectively, were hidden. The persons in question did not have travel documents and did not meet the legal conditions for entry into Romania," specifies the General Inspectorate of the Border Police.
The two migrants as well as the means of transport were handed over to the Bulgarian border authorities in order to continue the investigations.
