The Chamber of Deputies' Agriculture Committee on Tuesday gave the go-ahead for the draft act providing for the National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine to be also celebrated through events and programs organized at Romania's diplomatic missions and consular offices.

"The National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine can also be marked by Romania's diplomatic missions and consular offices through public and cultural diplomacy events and programs with a social, economic or scientific character which highlight the specifics of Romanian gastronomy and wine, in order to promote worldwide Romania's image, as well as the national wine industry, tourism and regional development," the draft act states.

The act thus complements Law No. 79/2019 creating the National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine on the first Sunday of October.

The law in force stipulates that Romanian wine means the wine made from grapes originating 100% from Romania and which has the Romanian flag inscribed on the bottle label.

The act also stipulates that the National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine may be celebrated by central and local public administration authorities and other state institutions, individuals or legal persons by organizing and participating in programs and events of a social or scientific character aimed at showcasing and promoting Romanian customs and traditional products.

The initiators of the bill complementing the law, consider that the organization of activities celebrating the National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine by the consular offices and diplomatic missions could stimulate exports, and Romanian wines can become ambassadors of the country's gastronomic and viticultural culture and quality, doubling also as a major factor for tourism.

"Taking into account the fact that wine holds an important place in Romanian culture and traditions, being associated with moments of celebration and hospitality, we consider it appropriate that the National Day of Romanian Gastronomy and Wine be marked also by Romania's representatives outside the country borders, at the diplomatic missions and consular offices, by events with a social or scientific character aimed at promoting the wine industry and authentic Romanian products," the initiators of the new bill argue.

The Agriculture Committee's report on the bill is to be debated and voted on by the Chamber's plenary meeting, which is the decision-making body.
