Government debt slightly down to 34.9 pct of GDP as of mid-year

The six-month government debt was slightly down to 34.9 percent of GDP in June 2018, compared to 35 percent of GDP in December 2017, although its value increased from 300.7 bln lei at the end of December 2017 to 305.5 bln lei at the end of June 2018, shows data released by the Ministry of Public Finance. 

The medium- and long-term debt accounts for the bulk of the amount, specifically over 295 billion lei, with 149.5 billion lei representing the debt in domestic lei, and 126 billion the debt in euro. Government securities account for more than 246 bln lei. 

The domestic government debt stands at 157 billion lei, while the foreign debt is 148.4 billion lei. 

Of the total government debt, the central public administration accounts for 291 billion lei, and the local administration for 14.3 billion lei. 

In the last five years, the GDP share of the government debt has steadily declined from 37.5 percent in 2013 to 35 percent in 2017.
