Gov't: First consultative meeting with NGOs on women's rights in Romania

A first consultative meeting took place at the Victoria Governmental Palace on Tuesday with representative non-governmental organisations in the area of women's rights and gender equality, coordinated by State Advisor with the Prime Minister's Chancellery Victoria Stoiciu, told Agerpres.

According to a Government press release, the main themes of the dialogue were the challenges currently faced by women in Romania in terms of rights and opportunities for equal treatment, as well as ways of collaboration between the government and the civil society to solve the problems identified.

"During the meeting, the state advisor proposed to the guests the draw up of a common agenda for medium-term discussions, so that during the next consultative meetings there will be applied debates on specific issues regarding the protection and promotion of women's rights in our country. The topics of dialogue of the future meetings will follow three areas of major interest: combating gender-based violence and violence against women, reproductive health and rights and gender equality in all spheres of Romanian society," the press release reads.

At the end of the round table at the Victoria Palace, it was agreed to continue the consultations initiated on Tuesday, and State Advisor Victoria Stoiciu stressed the government's interest in being a determined partner of the civil society in improving the situation of women's rights, the release informs.

On behalf of civil society, the dialogue was attended by member organisations of the Coalition for Gender Equality and the Network for Preventing and Combatting Violence against Women, and also attended by the initiator of the law criminalising sexual intercourse with a minor under 16 years, MP Diana Tusa.
