Multiple economic, cultural and social barriers and gender stereotypes continue to hinder women's involvement in the profession, the Head of the European Commission's Representation in Romania, Ramona Chiriac, told a press conference on Tuesday.
She said that when women are elected in office, health, education and social welfare improve, progress is made in good governance and the fight against corruption, and policies are more varied and gender-sensitive. Moreover, she added, when more women are active in business, the sector becomes more inclusive and fairer, agerpres reports.
Ramona Chiriac noted that a recent study shows that in Romania more than a third of companies active in the local market have female shareholders or partners, while two out of three startups were founded by women in 2022.
She added that women are still underrepresented on the boards of large companies and in CEO/Chairperson positions, but the percentage of those in a strategic role is above the European average in Romania and although our country ranks among the last in the European Union in terms of the gender equality index, women have at their disposal a number of initiatives and communities that can offer them financial support, networking opportunities, know-how and examples of best practices for business success.
