Health Minister Alexandru Rafila, speaking today in Valenii de Munte, said that the worst case scenario is that Romania numbers will reach over 70,000 new Covid infections daily.
"This is just for the record, it doesn't mean this will really happen, but if it does, please note that at such peaks we could have between 7,800 and 43,000 hospitalizations (...) and between 60 and 360 deaths," said Rafila.
The Minister presented the evolution of the pandemic and the impact of the Omicron spread, citing data from the National Public Health Institute (INSP).
According to INSP data, the risk of top capacities provided for in the resilience plans being attained in the first half of February is still looming, Agerpres.ro informs.
"These are working hypotheses. What has happened in the last two or three weeks has shown us that hospitalizations account for 2-3 percent of the total, intensive care cases are relatively few, and the situation is under control at the moment," Rafila said.
In this context he explained that the authorities have a plan to increase hospital care capacity.
"25,000 beds are currently allocated out of (...) over 120,000 beds available, that is 20 percent of the hospital care capacity, and we have a plan to increase this capacity by another 10 to 30 percent, but also keep hospitals available for the other patient categories which are at least as important as keeping the pandemic under control," he stated.
