The Custodian of the Crown, Margareta, welcomed, on Monday, at the Elisabeta Palace, high representatives of the Order of Malta, along with the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and the Order of Malta, told Agerpres.

"Her Majesty and I are very happy to celebrate this evening, at the Elisabeta Palace, 90 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta. This important act, which further linked Romania to the liberal, social, humanistic and spiritual principles and values of the European continent, was signed in December 1932, during the reign of King Carol II and Prince and Grand Master Fra' Ludovico Chigi Albani della Rovere," Prince Radu conveyed.

Prince Radu appreciated that "in the past 90 years, the Romanian Crown and the Order of Malta continued, with all the vicissitudes and consequences of the Second World War and the Cold War, a sustained, dignified, modest, altruistic cooperation, directed towards the needs and aspirations of society".

"Her Majesty the Custodian of the Crown continues the path started by King Carol II, her grandfather, and King Mihai I, her father, bringing today, in the bilateral relationship of the Order of Malta with Romania, added value, inspiration, civic and social example, and a strong historical legitimacy. The recent tragedies the world and our continent have gone through, the pandemic and, starting this year, the bloody war in Ukraine and the humanitarian tragedy it has produced, have brought us together more than ever and proved how much a prompt, efficient, generous and comprehensive response to those who are in acute need of medical, social, humanitarian, economic and, above all, psychological help means to our societies. After the visit of the Sovereign of the Order of Malta at the Elisabeta Palace since 2002, at a distance of 20 years, the Royal Family receives again a high prestigious delegation from the Order. Welcome!," said Prince Radu.

In his speech, the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs of the Order, Stefano Ronca, reviewed the rich and uninterrupted personal collaboration and the representatives of the Order of Malta with the Royal Family of Romania. The distinguished Maltese guest evoked the collaboration with King Mihai of Romania, who pleaded for the integration of our country into the EU and NATO, expressing his hope that the good relations will continue in the future.

The ambassador of the Order of Malta in Romania, Roberto Musneci, spoke a word of praise to the Royal Family, who evoked the contribution of Her Majesty Margareta and the Royal Foundation that the Custodian of the Crown leads to solving the refugee crisis generated by the war in Ukraine.

The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Bucharest, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendia, the ambassador of the Italian Republic, Alfredo Durante Mangoni, the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Bucharest Aurel Perca, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present at the event.
