Presidential Advisor for National Security Marius Lazurca says that the situation of the two workers injured on Monday in an accident in central Rome is of concern to him.

"I am concerned about the fate of the Romanian workers who were participating in the renovation of the Torre dei Conti in Rome. I sincerely hope that our compatriot still trapped under the rubble will be rescued as soon as possible. I wish the injured a speedy recovery! I have full confidence in the Italian rescuers," he wrote on the X platform.

He also heads the Department of Foreign Policy, Strategic Partnerships and Romanians Abroad within the Presidential Administration.

A Romanian worker was slightly injured after a building under renovation in central Rome collapsed on Monday, and another is trapped under the rubble and is to be extracted from the area, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) reported.

Italian authorities present at the scene reported that a worker, a Romanian citizen, was slightly injured and was transported to hospital for evaluation of his health. He is currently out of danger.

A second Romanian citizen was affected by the partial collapse of the building in which he was working. He is conscious and communicating with Italian authorities, who are making efforts to extract him from the affected area, the operation being ongoing.

"We have confirmation that there are two Romanians injured in this regrettable incident, one 48 years old and one 66 years old, both are lucid and communicating. Both at the hospital, where the first rescued Romanian worker was transported, and at the scene where the situation is still critical and the Romanian worker is currently trapped under the rubble, we have colleagues present for consular assistance and communication with the Italian authorities. The work of the firefighters is vital at this time," the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Toiu wrote on Facebook.

Representatives of the Consulate General in Rome and the Interior Attaché of the Ministry of Internal Affairs have taken urgent steps with the competent local authorities, in order to obtain information regarding the citizenship, identity and health status of the affected persons, as well as the circumstances of the incident.

The MAE informs that a consul from the Consulate General in Rome is at the scene of the incident, ensuring communication with the Italian authorities and being prepared to provide consular assistance, and another consul from the Romanian consular office went to the medical unit where the second Romanian citizen was transported.

The Consulate General of Romania in Rome continues the dialogue with the local authorities, keeping this subject in priority attention, being prepared to provide consular assistance, according to its competences, if the situation requires it.

The MAE reminds that Romanian citizens can request consular assistance at the following telephone numbers of the Consulate General in Rome: (+39)06.835.233.44; (+39) 06.835.233.52; (+39) 06.835.233.58; (+39) 06.835.233.56; (+39) 06.835.233.69; (+39) 06.835.233.71; (+39) 06.835.233.74, calls being redirected to the Contact and Support Center for Romanian Citizens Abroad (CCSCRS) and taken over by Call Center operators on a 24-hour basis.

A worker was hospitalized with serious injuries after a medieval tower under renovation in central Rome, near the Colosseum, collapsed on Monday.

Two other workers were slightly injured and refused to be taken to hospital, ANSA said.

National fire department spokesman Luca Cari previously told Reuters that rescue teams were trying to extract a person trapped under the rubble.

The 29-meter-high Torre dei Conti stands on Via dei Fori Imperiali, the wide thoroughfare that connects Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum.

The building has not been used since 2006, but was undergoing renovations as part of a four-year restoration project that was due to be completed next year, according to city officials.

Footage posted on social media shows clouds of dust billowing out of the tower's windows and the sound of masonry collapsing.

The area around the tower had been closed to pedestrians due to the restoration work.

The Torre dei Conti was built in the early 13th century by Pope Innocent III for his family.
