The 'Dealul Spirii' Bucharest-Ilfov Emergency Management Inspectorate (ISUBIF) bears a glorious name, which is evocative of the Romanian firefighter's devotion and courage towards their neighbor and homeland, Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu said in a message delivered on the organization's 181st anniversary.
The minister said that this is Romania's largest emergency response unit, accounting for approximately 22% of all interventions.
Predoiu commended the structure's efficiency, which is the result of a bold reform that concentrated resources and shortened the decision-making chain.
"This high intervention capacity was aggregated following a courageous reform at the time, which consolidated resources in Bucharest and Ilfov, concentrated command and eliminated dupe decision-making chains, speeding up the decision and response and creating the premises for a more efficient intervention," Catalin Predoiu said in his message.
"This year, first responders from Bucharest and Ilfov carried out over 75,000 missions to put out fires, provide first aid, extricate people or protect communities or the environment, and for 61,271 people, the prompt intervention of firefighters meant a new chance at life," said the Interior minister.
Firefighters and paramedics from the Bucharest and Ilfov County Mobile Emergency Resuscitation and Extrication Service (SMURD) have permanently improved their intervention capacity, with the average response time in 2024 standing at approximately 9 minutes for firefighting crews and approximately 7 minutes for first aid crews.
"I send out all my appreciation to the military firefighters, doctors, nurses and paramedics, IntMin pilots who step in to provide support, SMURD drivers, being aware that behind each intervention there are professional people devoted to the community, who make split-second decisions in critical moments when there is no room for mistakes," Predoiu wrote.
