President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday that he had a meeting with the Attorney General, asking him to take all the necessary steps to expedite investigations, particularly in "extremely old" cases, such as the December 1989 Revolution or the miners' riots.

"I had a meeting with the Attorney General here, at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, and I asked him to take whatever steps are feasible to expedite the investigations. It's as easy as that: we have cases dating since long, some extremely old, and I'm thinking here of the miners' riot or the 1989 Revolution case. It's unacceptable that we just sit here not knowing what actually happened at the Revolution, who was guilty, what happened during the miners' riots, who are the guilty persons. Speaking of guilt, I mean the people who violated the law, not a historical guilt. It's not yet the historians' job. For now, both the Revolution and the miners' riot case are for the prosecutors to handle, and whoever did wrong will pay," said the head of the state.

He added that he also asked the Attorney General to act towards speeding up investigations and having the cases sent to court, should the prosecutors find violations of the law.

"Where no violation of the law is found, but just laughable denouncements, let the name of the person who was wrongly accused be immediately cleared," added Iohannis. agerpres.
