President Klaus Iohannis on Monday evening in Timisoara said that those who have plagiarized must leave the system if proven guilty, but the ones who haven't plagiarized and are accused of it must have their reputation cleaned fast.
"This matter [plagiarism] must be clarified by specialists when there is a request in this respect. For what will happen is simple, I have also said it in my speech today [at the West University of Timisoara]. If a public person has plagiarized we must get over the situation and the person in question must leave the public office, same as a university professor, if found to have plagiarized must leave their office," President Iohannis said.
His statement came in the context of a question from the press on the topic of the alleged plagiarism in the case of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) head Laura Codruta Kovesi.
The head of state underscored that the rule is valid regardless of the person's name and that he does not wish to make the discussion personal regarding X, Y or Z.
"Who has plagiarized must leave. I have discussed with the students and they told me that plagiarism isn't the greatest issue of the university system. Plagiarism is a great problem of the society because it is a form of theft and if we want to build a better society with cleaner, more transparent politics, then we must be categorical. Who has plagiarized must leave," Iohannis underscored.
Romania's President pointed out that, however, anyone who hasn't plagiarized but was accused "must be defended by those who know to evaluate the thesis and say shortly that the person in question hasn't plagiarized.
"Same as in a plagiarism situation we must conclude with the person's elimination from among respectable persons, the person unfairly accused must have their reputation cleaned at the shortest," Klaus Iohannis explained, cited by agerpres.
