Chief prosecutor of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) Laura Codruta Kovesi claims that there have been many very aggressive attacks at DNA lately mounted by criminally instigated people and that huge amounts of money have been paid to harass corruption prosecutors.

"There have been very aggressive attacks lately at DNA mounted by the persons we are investigating. I can tell you that such attacks are launched in order to intimidate prosecutors, but there is also a quite aggressive campaign conducted to question the credibility of DNA. As a matter of fact, huge amounts of money and performance bonuses have been paid to harass DNA prosecutors and denigrate DNA. (...) The latest attacks, mounted only by defendants under our investigation or people prosecuted under other files prove that," Kovesi told the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM) on Thursday in reply to recent claims by former Prime Minister Victor Ponta that she allegedly frequented a wine cellar owned by controversial businessman Sebastian Ghita, currently prosecuted by DNA.

As for her presence at the CSM, Kovesi said she came to support a DNA prosecutor subjected to a disciplinary inquiry.

"I have come to support my colleague as I did last time as well. I hope CSM will make a fair decision. This disciplinary file was opened because a DNA prosecutor has dared check the use of public money by an intelligence service that had two former interior ministers, the intelligence chief officers and several intelligence officers prosecuted. I believe such investigations should be encouraged and I am waiting for the CSM verdict in this disciplinary case," Kovesi added.
