The rector of the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology (UMFST) of Targu Mures, Professor Leonard Azamfirei, PhD, and the General Manager Microsoft Central Europe EURA, Bogdan Putinica, signed on Tuesday a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of the first Smart Hospital in the country.
"This is an absolutely unique event in Romania and I would like to congratulate both the university and the management team for this truly innovative concept, a Smart Hospital in Romania. I don't think that anything like this has ever been talked about before, or if it has, we haven't heard about it, but even more so, I don't think that anything like this has ever been done in Romania. And the congratulations are very well deserved because you were able to finalize such a project, because you brought it to a stage of maturity, which today takes a new step towards its successful execution and especially because you successfully combine cutting-edge technologies. I believe that we will also talk, if we have the opportunity, about artificial intelligence in education and medicine, to bring all this set of innovation and advance, let's say, that technology supports in the service of humankind," Bogdan Putinica told a press conference held at UMFST Targu Mures.
According to the Microsoft representative, the company will be involved in this strategic project implemented by UMFST Targu Mures and supported by the Romanian Government.
"For us, education, I've said it every time I had the chance, is the number one priority. Romania is our chance for the future and these are not empty words. I am glad to be here today, I am glad that together with my team and my colleagues from the education division, who are with me, we will support this project. We will be by your side, with specialists, with everything Microsoft can bring to make this project a success. And I hope to see you even sooner, maybe, but clearly at the inauguration, at the ribbon cutting, with pride that we are Romanians if we do something like this in Romania. It can be done and I emphasize this very much, it can be done where there is will and leadership. And for us, as Microsoft, Microsoft Romania, we are honored to be part of this partnership," said Bogdan Putinica.
The rector of UMFST Targu Mures, Dr. Leonard Azamfirei, said that the Memorandum of Understanding between the university and Microsoft Romania strengthens the collaboration between academia and IT industry, with the aim of developing the first Smart Hospital in Romania.
"This is a special event for the university. And not only for the university, I would say that for the entire medical and university system in Romania, the moment when we initial an agreement that we have been working on for a long time with Microsoft Romania for the implementation of a totally new concept for Romania, namely the Smart Hospital concept, the intelligent hospital (...). You will probably remember, especially those of you from Targu Mures, about the concept that I left two weeks ago, UniCity - University Hospital. And what is happening today is part of a bigger project that we have dimensioned for the next 10 years. It is a matter of vision, it is a matter of innovation, because the idea of Smart Hospital implicitly has innovation behind it, too, innovation that we should understand not only in terms of the medical activity, which is the first and most interactive with the patient, but we are also talking about innovation in the management of a hospital," said the rector of UMFST Targu Mures.
The rector said that Microsoft is the most suitable partner that UMFST could have, because it has demonstrated its expertise and technical capacity over the years.
Among the objectives of the partnership signed on Tuesday are the transfer of expertise, the integration of cutting-edge technologies in healthcare - AI-based tools and integrated cloud services - and the exchange of best practices.
UMFST Targu Mures would like George Emil Palade Hospital to become a leader in innovation, a provider of patient-centered care, a research center and an educational hub, by setting a new benchmark for medical excellence in Romania.
