The move to suspend Klaus Iohannis from the office of President of Romania caused more chaos than stability and I believe that our country didn't need an additional political crisis, Romanian MEP and EP Vice-President Nicu Stefanuta declared on Wednesday in a meeting with a group of Romanian journalists in Strasbourg, informs Agerpres.
''Regarding the political moves to suspend [Klaus Iohannis from the position of president], I do not separate them from his resignation, because the two issues are linked. I believe that the move to suspend him has created more chaos than stability, and that Romania did not need an additional political crisis. Internationally, I was asked at the highest level, and in very colorful language, what is going on in Romania. Anyway, these steps do not create more stability, but rather strengthen the far Right, which 'wants more blood', said the independent MEP who is affiliated to the European Greens.
Klaus Iohannis stepped down as President of Romania on Monday, following the initiation of the parliamentary procedure to suspend him from office. The Constitutional Court on Tuesday declared the position of President of Romania vacant and ruled that Senate President Ilie Bolojan shall take over as acting head of state, starting February 12. Ilie Bolojan will serve as acting president until May.
The first round of the presidential election will be held on May 4, and the second round on May 18.
