Minister-delegate for European Affairs Negrescu: We are seeking to conclude a Brexit agreement to protect EU citizens

Victor Negrescu

Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu on Tuesday participated in Brussels in the meeting of the General Affairs Council Article 50, in the context of negotiations triggered by the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, on which occasion the Romanian official said that there are discussions going on about the conclusion of an agreement to ensure an adequate protection to all European citizens in the United Kingdom.

The meeting agenda also included the current status of negotiations with the UK and the preparations for the meeting of the European Council Article 50 of December 15, informed a release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

"The EU Chief-Negotiatior, Michel Barnier, presented the European Commission's assessment with respect to the current status of negotiations and the joint report on the convergence points between the two parties. Therefore, Michel Barnier maintained enough progress was made in all the three key-fields during the first stage of the negotiations (citizens' rights, financial costs, the Irish border) and recommended moving to the second stage, where they are going to discuss such aspects related to the future relations between the EU and UK," specifies the above mentioned source.

MAE also informed that the negotiations are set to continue by simultaneously approaching such aspects regarding the Brexit that couldn't be solved during the first stage, but without discussing again what was already established.

Moreover, all professional qualifications already obtained or about to be obtained before the exit date shall be recognized by both parties.

MAE informs that in the context of discussions regarding the enough progress made during the first stage of negotiations, the Minister-delegate for European Affairs hailed the efforts made by the European Commission in obtaining such advantageous solutions for both parties, while mentioning that Romania is going to act with full responsibility, during the whole process, in carrying out its obligations as EU member states and in the spirit of loyalty to the other 26 states.

The Romanian community in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has constantly grown after Romania's accession to the EU, and continues to grow, says MAE.

Through its structure coordinated by the Minister-delegate for European Affairs, on March 22, 2017, MAE created a inter-ministerial mechanism to prepare Romania's mandates and watch negotiations for Brexit.

This includes sectoral level meetings (every time when needed, depending on the pace of negotiations); and also at coordination level between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Finances (Monthly) and high level meetings (quarterly).

The Inter-ministerial Council for Brexit, which is a governmental body adopting political lines for defining Romania's standpoints in the negotiations between EU 27 and the UK, is led by the Romanian Prime Minister and coordinated by the Minister-delegate for European Affairs.
