The Ministry of Justice (MJ) announced that specific activities are underway in Greece to execute the European arrest warrant for the former mayor of the capital, Sorin Oprescu, detained on Saturday near the Thessaloniki airport.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice sent on Saturday, AGERPRES, the Bucharest Tribunal issued, on May 13, 2022, the warrant for the execution of the prison sentence in the name of the Romanian citizen Sorin Mircea Oprescu, sentenced to serve a sentence of 10 years and 8 months, for committing the crimes of constituting an organized criminal group, taking bribes and laundering money.

"On the date of issuing the warrant for the person in question, national and international surveillance was ordered, subsequently, on May 17, 2022, the person in question was arrested on Greek territory, but his surrender to Romania was refused by the Greek authorities. In May 2025, the SIRENE Bureau requested the Bucharest Court to assess whether the European arrest warrant could be executed again, in the context of the modification of the detention conditions. The Bucharest Court agreed, so that the arrest was reiterated. Following the collaboration between the Romanian authorities and their Greek counterparts, the said Sorin Mircea Oprescu was detained, on Saturday, near the airport in Thessaloniki, Greece," the statement reads.

Ministry of Justice representatives emphasize that Saturday's result represents "a success of close cooperation" between the authorities in Romania and Greece and, at the same time, "a firm direction" of permanent involvement in bringing the wanted persons to the country, in order to execute the sentences on the territory of our state.
