Moldovan Ambassador: Without the Ukrainian people's sacrifice, we wouldn't be talking about Moldova's integration in EU
Republic of Moldova's Ambassador in Bucharest Victor Chirila on Wednesday said that without Ukraine's fight against Russia's aggression there would be no talk today about Moldova's integration in the European Union.
"Without Ukraine's fight against Russia's aggression we would not be talking today about our integration into the European Union, about accession, about negotiations with the EU, we would not have received the status of candidate country to the EU. This is due to Ukraine, to the sacrifice of the Ukrainian people, that is why we are deeply indebted to the Ukrainian people," Chirila told the Rebuilding Ukraine Forum, organised by the Romania-Ukraine Bilateral Chamber of Commerce under the high patronage of the Romanian and Ukrainian prime ministers.
He added that after 20 months of war we can talk about reconstruction, renewal and future.
"We are making plans not just to survive, but to build a better, more prosperous world together with the EU, with the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, which have been by the side of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. Thanks to the support of our partners, we can now talk about reconstruction, but in my view, some conditions must be met to make sure that this effort will be successful for Ukraine, Moldova and the EU in general. First and foremost, we must continue to support Ukraine to win this war and this peace. Secondly, Ukraine and Moldova need clear security guarantees for the future that Russia will never try to attack again," he said.
Chirila said that only these security guarantees will give partners the security to come to Ukraine and Moldova to rebuild the whole region.
"We also have to start rebuilding the necessary infrastructure that will facilitate the reconstruction efforts from the EU, the US, and that means that the roads between Ukraine and Moldova, Ukraine and Poland must be good, that the rail routes must be good, the ports must be modernised, the gas pipelines, we have to start building this infrastructure that will be the basis of these reconstruction efforts. The Republic of Moldova has been part of this reconstruction since the beginning of the war. (...) The Republic of Moldova is a key player in the security routes initiative and last week, together with Ukraine, we opened a new railway corridor. This corridor will even pass through Transnistria and it is a good sign, it means that the Transnistrians understand that realities are changing and that the future is with Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and the EU," said the Moldovan Ambassador in Bucharest.
He said that another condition for a successful reconstruction is that Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova become part of the European Union, "to integrate their economies into the EU single market."
