NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana called on Sunday on Romanians and particularly on young first-time voters to turn out in as large numbers as possible, because this is an important moment in national and European history.

"I have come to fulfill my civic duty to vote in these highly important elections. My call is for Romanians to turn to the vote in as high numbers as possible, this is extremely important. A special thought for the over one million young men and women who are to cast their ballot for the first time - it is very important that they take this first step towards democratic and civic involvement and, even if - regrettably - we didn't have a more structured debate for the European elections, I hope that the Romanian diaspora too reports to the polls in high numbers to vote for the European Parliament," Geoana, who voted at the Bucharest 'I.L. Caragiale' National Highschool, said.

His advice to the voters was "to look at those they want to invest with their vote beyond political colors, to look at their quality, if they are efficient, if they are serious."

"The future holders of local office and the Romanian MEPs we elect today are in fact the first set of political leaders the Romanians are called to invest in this super-hectic electoral year. We are practically at the beginning of a new political cycle," Geoana added.

The NATO senior official expressed his hope that the new team will do its duty towards the country, regardless of political hue, ideology, or any other criterion.

"Come to vote in as many numbers as possible. It is important, it is a very complicated moment in the European, world and national history. We must all get involved and decide on our own destiny," Geoana concluded.
