There is a buzz on the electricity market, and consumers, having the opportunity to migrate from one supplier to another, put good pressure, from a competition perspective, on electricity suppliers, said George Niculescu, president of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), on Friday, at the conference "Evolution of competition in key sectors under the impact of the energy transition and digitalization".

"Recently, we have noticed that there is an effervescence on the electricity market, consumers, having the possibility to migrate from one supplier to another, are putting good pressure, from a competition perspective, on electricity suppliers. They are reacting and we are seeing offers that are decreasing in the price comparator of the regulatory authority, offers that are increasingly attractive for electricity consumers, mainly households," said Niculescu, agerpres reports.

He explained that the value of the electricity bill is determined, on the one hand, by the volume of energy consumed and, on the other hand, by the price of energy compared to that volume.

"So, we can consume a small amount of energy, and if the price is high, the bill will ultimately be high, or we can consume a lot of energy at a low price. Unfortunately, this, under the conditions in which VAT has increased from 19% to 21%, is more difficult to achieve," explained the head of ANRE.

He added that, after July 1, when the capping and compensation scheme expired for electricity, the Regulatory Authority noted a strong consumer migration, "tens of thousands of consumers migrating from one supplier to another in search of a better price for electricity."

Niculescu also mentioned that suppliers do not always find the necessary quantities of energy on the market to buy them and not always at a competitive price. "And suppliers, if we want them to come up with good and decreasing offers, to meet the needs of consumers, must have somewhere to buy energy at costs that are also decreasing," explained the ANRE president.

He stated that last year, traders bought energy from producers and suppliers did so less, now suppliers are the ones who purchase energy from the producer, which is beneficial for the market from a price perspective.

The Competition Council organized, on Friday, the conference "Evolution of competition in key sectors under the impact of the energy transition and digitalization", on which the Report on competition in key sectors - 2025 will be launched.

The event is attended by representatives of the Presidency, the Government, the Parliament, the European Commission, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as public authorities, the business environment, the legal environment and civil society.
