The Romanian Border Police took part in an exercise proposed by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the US Department of Energy, between September 11 and 13, in the Port of Constanta, aimed at verifying the operational capabilities of the institutions involved in our country, informs the relevant institution in a press release sent to AGERPRES.

The exercise was organized by the Embassy of the United States of America in Bucharest, in the context of the Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) Program, which is designed to detect nuclear and radioactive materials at the border in order to prevent the illicit trafficking of these products, agerpres reports.

The event was attended by officers specialised in countering cross-border crime with the Romanian Border Police, the Romanian Police, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Gendarmerie, the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Romanian Customs Authority, the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control and the Horia Hulubei National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN).

In 2008, the US Department of Energy and the Inspectorate General of Border Police (IGPF), through the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administrative Reform, signed an agreement to detect smuggling of nuclear and radioactive materials.

The Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) Program mainly provides for the installation and deployment of portal monitors for the detection of gamma-ray and neutron radiation at border checkpoints, airports and seaports at the EU's external border with Ukraine, Serbia, the Republic of Moldova and the Black Sea, as well as at international airports. The program also involves the development of an online warning system comprising a central monitoring base, central alarm stations and local alarm stations. Also within the framework of this project, the General Inspectorate of the Border Police received from the US Department of Energy eight vehicles equipped with portable detection systems of nuclear and radioactive materials, which were used by officers specialized in countering cross-border crime.
