The celebration of the Romanian Principalities Union Day not just in Romania, but also in Brussels, in the context in which Romania holds the Presidency at the EU Council is a reason for pride and, also, "a confirmation of the fact that the Romanian people always had the strength and wisdom to chose the right path," Prime Minister Viorica Dancila stated on Thursday in Brussels, in a message conveyed on the occasion of the celebration of 24 January (the Romanian Principalities Union Day).
"The fact that we mark today the Romanian Principalities Union Day both in Romania and in Brussels, where, as the state holding the EU Council Presidency we take on the responsibilities with honor, is a reason for pride for our country and for Romanians. It is also a confirmation of the fact that the Romanian people always had the strength and wisdom to chose the right path. I have absolute confidence in our national and European destiny. I have confidence in the Romanians and in Romania," the PM conveyed in her message.
The PM mentioned that 160 years have passed since the first major historical act in the becoming of the current unitary and sovereign state - the Romanian Principalities Union on 24 January 1859, through the election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the ruler of Moldavia and of Wallachia, underscoring that, at that time, the Romanians also had a "favorable external context, European-friendly states."
"At that time, our aristocracy, through its intellectual and political peaks, as well as the majority of the population, succeeded in transforming into reality, on a sustainable basis, the ideal of the Romanian national unity, foreseen by the genius of ruler Michael the Brave [Mihai Viteazul] in 1600 and perfected with the Greater Union of 1918. We had a favorable external context on our side, European-friendly states, but above all, we had remarkable Romanian elites who believed in the Romanian destiny and an extraordinary popular will to "dry the Milcov [the Milcov River]" to remove the barriers between Romanian and Romanian," PM Viorica Dancila stated.
Furthermore, she stated that the Romanians "have the experience of internal cohesion for a cause, of the fight for our place in history and in the world, of the victory that has never been achieved through invasions, but by defending what was ours"
"Let us celebrate this moment of our history with confidence in Romania and in the inexhaustible resources of the Romanian being. We have the experience of internal cohesion for a cause, of the fight for our place in history and in the world, of the victory that has never been achieved in conquest, but by defending what belonged to us. This page of history and the ideal of unity of our ancestors who made possible the becoming of the current Romania are fundamental to the future of the Romanian nation, to our evolution as a modern society, attached to the European values in which the rights and liberties are respected and defended, as a sovereign state, valued by the European and international partners," the Prime Minister said.
