Swimmer David Popovici, double European and world champion, rower Simona Radis, double European and world champion, canoeist Catalin Chirila, European and world champion, are just three of the Romanians nominated in the survey of the Bulgarian news agency BTA for the title of the best athlete in the Balkans in 2022, now at its 49th edition, told Agerpres.
On the list of athletes with performances in 2022 there are rowers Ionela-Livia Cozmiuc, Sergiu Vasile Bejan, Marius Vasile Cozmiuc, weightlifter Loredana Toma, gymnasts Sabrina Voinea, Amalia Puflea, athlete Bianca Florentina Ghelber, wrestlers Nicu Ojog, Andreea Ana, water jumper Constantin Popovici, boxers Lacramioara Perijoc and Andrei Araoie, all medalists at the European and/or World Championships.
Among the athletes who were nominated are Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, Croatian footballer Luka Modric, Serbian volleyball player Tijana Boskovic or Turkish fighters Taha Akgul and Riza Kayaalp.
Djokovic won last year's edition, this being his seventh victory in the traditional survey. Nicoleta-Ancuta Bodnar and Simona Radis, Olympic and European champions in women's double rowing in 2021, ranked on the 10th place, other Romanians who were also high in the hierarchy were swimmer Robert Glinta, European champion, ranked 27th, and fencer Ana-Maria Popescu, Olympic vice-champion and winner of the World Cup in fencing, on the 31st spot.
