President Klaus Iohannis will participate, on Thursday and Friday, in the European Council meeting and the extended Euro Summit, which will take place in Brussels, the Presidential Administration informed in a release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.
President Iohannis will emphasize that our country will continue to be a firm supporter of Ukraine and will plead for the continuation of the support provided by the European Union, as long as it is needed. At the same time, he will support the opening of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova until the end of this year.
With reference to the situation in the Middle East, president Iohannis will reiterate the need for a clear and united vision at the European level, the conflict having consequences including for the EU and European citizens, respect for international humanitarian law, avoiding the escalation of the conflict, identifying solutions to achieve sustainable peace, based on the two-state solution, as well as avoiding the exacerbation of extremism at the level of European societies in this context.
Also, Iohannis will emphasize the need to obtain an agreement on the Multiannual Financial Framework by the end of this year, which will allow the achievement of the multiannual objectives and respond to the immediate challenges of the EU.
President Iohannis will emphasize the importance of consolidating the Single Market and support a balanced approach in defining measures in this area. Also, the Romanian president will insist on "removing all remaining barriers to free movement and ensuring fair competition among member states".
EU leaders will have a strategic discussion on migration, during which president Klaus Iohannis will plead for the strengthening of cooperation with third countries of origin and transit of migrants at all levels and will highlight Romania's contribution to the protection of the external borders of the Union.
Moreover, the EU leaders will bring back to the discussion the importance of a comprehensive and coordinated approach at the European level to strengthen the response and preparedness in the face of crises, an approach that Romania supported at the European Council in June and which it will continue to promote, given its relevance for the internal resilience of the EU, said the Presidential Administration.
Regarding the situation in Kosovo and Serbia and the one in the South Caucasus, Romania will support the continuation of the mediation efforts of the European Union, both in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, and in the relationship between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
During the extended Euro Summit, president Iohannis will plead for close coordination of economic policies, in order to increase the resilience of the European economy.
