President Klaus Iohannis on Saturday took part in the international meeting of over 10,000 ethnic Germans, on which occasion he said that the commitment taken through the Sibiu Declaration, during the 2019 EU Summit, stays valid especially in "the difficult times we live in, with all the complex and serious problems we are facing," while referring first of all to the "the need for a strong and secure Europe", Agerpres reports.

"Five years ago, in this place, through the Sibiu Declaration of the European Council, we made a commitment, which remains as important and special today, in the difficult times we line in, with all the complex and serious problems we are facing: through the contribution of us all, through the energy of the cultural diversity that has enriched us, through solidarity and dialogue we will develop a Europe of freedom and democracy, a strong and secure Europe, a prosperous and competitive Europe," said Klaus Iohannis.

The head of state called Romania a "blessed country of Europe."

"800 years after the act by which our ancestors were reconfirmed their rights and, first of all, their freedom to build a society of justice and respect for the laws, we enliven ourselves by calling the anthem of Europe: "Alle Menschen werden Bruder." I congratulate the organizers, I wish everyone a successful meeting and welcome you to this blessed land of Europe, where we find ourselves together, both Eminescu's verse "What I wish for you, sweet Romania," as well as in "Siebenburgen, susse Heimat, Unser teures Vaterland!" Klaus Iohannis pointed out.

He emphasised the contribution of the German minority to the development of modern Romania.

"Modern Romania, founded on the vision of the elites who have enlivened all the generations of the last two hundred years, has capitalized on the efforts and work of its great personalities, among whom an important place is occupied by those from the German minority. The prestige that our country enjoys today it is also the work of all those who, preserving the memory and traditions of their ancestors, understand their responsibility to carry forward their aspirations for freedom and prosperity," concluded President Klaus Iohannis.

The head of state reminded that this year is a special one for the German minority of which he is a part, because eight centuries have passed "since the enshrining of the rights of the ancestors settled in this region, colonists in search of freedom, but at the same time defenders of European civilization and of Christian values in the face of attacks coming from the East."

"The Diploma of King Andrei II or the Golden Bull, as it is also called, established a complex and functional administration regime of the Saxon community, in the aspects of political, judicial, religious, economic and military life, thus generating the development of settlements, the flourishing of crafts, trade, education and the arts. When the Saxons joined the Great Union in 1919, they brought to the Romanian nation a multi-century civic experience, a rich industrial tradition and a brilliant cultural heritage with which today, we are all proud," Iohannis pointed out.

President Klaus Iohannis is participating on Saturday, in Sibiu, in the International Meeting of the Saxons, to which German dignitaries, the Minister of Culture, Raluca Turcan, ambassadors were also invited.
