President Iohannis: Romania offered the main route for the export of Ukrainian grains

Romania offered the main route for the export of Ukrainian grains, with almost 25 million tonnes of grains from Ukraine having been exported through Romania since the beginning of the war, President Klaus Iohannis said on Wednesday, told Agerpres.

The Romanian head of state hosted the Summit of the Three Seas Initiative, at the end of which he held a joint press conference with the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenkovic.

Iohannis pointed out that Romania has "by far the most important export route" for Ukraine.

"We faced many challenges, because our logistics were not prepared for such dimensions. We changed things very quickly, we managed to offer very good conditions (...) and we continue," he pointed out.

The President appreciated that the attacks on Ukrainian ports are "a huge problem."

"We will improve the other routes, we have accepted Ukrainian sea transports through the territorial waters of Romania, of the Black Sea, we will continue to improve exports by rail and road and thus prevent the creation of a famine, because Ukraine is one of the most important producers of cereals in the world," said Klaus Iohannis.

The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, also spoke about the possibility of creating new transport routes for the grains from Ukraine.

"According to our estimates, if certain conditions are met, the transit of Ukrainian grains through the Baltic Sea and through Polish ports could reach 10 million tonnes per year, and this would represent an important support," Nauseda pointed out.

He added that the transit of Ukrainian grains transported to non-EU countries threatened by a food crisis must be viewed separately from that of grains that remain on the competitive EU market.
