President Nicusor Dan expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the devastating floods that hit India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam in late November and early December.

"My thoughts go to all the people affected by the devastating floods in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish strength to the rescue teams, hoping their efforts will save as many lives as possible," the head of the state wrote on Tuesday on X.

The floods and landslides that hit Sri Lanka last week caused at least 410 deaths and affected almost 1.5 million people, according to a new assessment released Tuesday by the local Disaster Management Agency (DMC), AFP reports.

Also, a total of 336 people were still missing on Tuesday, according to the same source, following the storm - the worst natural disaster to hit this South Asian island since the 2004 tsunami.

Last week, torrential monsoon rains associated with two tropical cyclones drenched Sri Lanka and affected parts of Sumatra (Indonesia), southern Thailand, and northern Malaysia, according to AFP.

Vast areas of these countries - as well as the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, and portions of Cambodia and Laos - experienced precipitation levels in November that have never been recorded in monthly NOAA data since 2012.

Almost the entire territory of Sri Lanka has experienced record rainfall, according to an AFP analysis of U.S. meteorological data.
