It's important that the audit institutions be aware of the changes and developments that appear at the European Union level and to play a pro-active role in approaching them, Mihai Busuioc, the President of the Romanian Court of Accounts, said on Tuesday, in the opening of the meeting of liaison officers of Supreme Audit Institutions in the EU member states.

The event is being organised for the first time in Bucharest over April 9-10, in the context in which Romania is currently exercising the presidency of the Council of the EU.

The main goals of the meeting are to plan and coordinate the activities to be carried out on the sidelines of the Contact Committee of Heads of Supreme Audit Institutions in the member states, to update specific procedures and regulations, and to establish the topics for discussion to be included in the agenda of the event to take place in Warsaw, in June 2019.

The discussions during this event are meant as an analysis of the current activities of the working groups, as well as a preparation of the works of the Contact Committee to focus on "Digital Europe - Challenges and Opportunities from the EU SAIs."

The meeting of the liaison officers of Supreme Audit Institutions also includes a session that will precede the actual debates in Warsaw, which will focus on the digital strategy of the European Union, in the context of the current challenges posed by the audit of the EU digitization processes and the preparation of the Supreme Audit Institutions for such audits, and will review the results obtained by the coordinators of the working groups, while establishing the calendar of activities for 20202-2021.

"We are, each of us, representing institutions with a powerful impact on a solid and sound democratic system. Our activity has been facing major changes over time and we are always called to deal with challenges facing a society that is permanently changing. I believe that the most important role that you have, as liaison officers, is to identify and discuss on the developments and changes that appear at the European Union level with an impact on the audit activity. It's important our institutions to be aware of these challenges, to anticipate them, if possible, and play a pro-active role in approaching from an external public audit perspective," was one of the messages of the head of Romania's Court of Accounts, according to the release.

Participating in the meeting of the liaison officers of the Supreme Audit Institutions in the EU member states are also representatives of the institutions from the candidate countries and possible future candidate countries to EU accession, invited as active observers.

The network of liaison officers of the Supreme Audit Institutions has an important role of coordination and it's also meant to ensure an efficient cooperation in terms of the preparation of the decisions and meetings of the Contact Committee of SAI heads in EU member states.
