Social Democrat Sorin Grindeanu, who was officially elected PSD Chairman at the party's Congress on Friday, declared that he does not want to be a leader who runs away from history, but one who accepts responsibility for the party's origins, "with good and bad, with mistakes and achievements", and for the mistakes he asked, on everybody's behalf, for the Romanians' forgiveness.
"As a member of the PSD since 1996, I do not want to be a Chairman who runs away from history, but one who accepts responsibility for the party's origins. With good and bad, with mistakes and achievements. For the mistakes, I ask on behalf of all, for the Romanians' forgiveness. Trust can only be rebuilt on a clean basis. And that is exactly what I intend to do today. Including by taking an introspective look at ourselves. Today I want to invite all generations of the party to reconciliation, so that all the valuable voices of the Left can be heard again, so that all the truly Social-Democratic ideas can unite in one project: a strong and prosperous Romania. Today, for the first time in the history of the party, I want us to thank the former Social-Democrat leaders, who have steered this party during the most difficult years, who defended the cause of the Left in Romania and kept the PSD at the forefront of Romanian politics," Grindeanu said at the PSD Extraordinary Congress.
He underscored that the former PSD leaders are important people, who can prove this at any time.
"We have Adrian Nastase, during whose term in office Romania joined NATO. We have Mircea Geoana, under whose watch Romania joined the European Union. We have Victor Ponta, during whose term Romania's course has changed economically and socially. And we have Marcel Ciolacu, during whose term Romania joined Schengen. Tell me if there is another party that can list so many historical achievements! The others - Liberals, progressives or AUR members - can only be credited to creating a parallel state, ushering in wage cuts, mockery and theft during the pandemic, the VAT rise or nothing at all. Gentlemen, former party leaders, thank you for your presence and I hope you missed the warmth and energy of the Social Democratic Party! Today, the PSD is, once again, everyone's home," Grindeanu said.
Regarding international relations, he explained that the PSD must "give the signal for Romania's external image to be restored".
"For years now we have seen a bloody conflict taking place on Romania's border and the prospects are deeply concerning. The United States of America has withdrawn a part of the troops it had here, while the Romanians are left with no explanation. The PSD has guided Romania towards the West through the Snagov Pact. It was also the PSD that signed the agreements for accession to NATO, the EU and Schengen. In other words, it is clear that the PSD must also cover now this representation vacuum. The PSD must compensate for the inaction of political decision-makers and give the signal for a diplomatic offensive, for restoring Romania's external image", the PSD Chairman said.
