Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna said on Wednesday in Petresti, when asked about the Constitutional Court's postponement of its decision on magistrates' pensions, that the reforms are absolutely necessary and carry significant financial consequences for Romania's budget, warning that the country risks losing hundreds of millions of euros.

"I cannot welcome such decisions because we have seen the financial impact. Certainly, the Constitutional Court is an institution that must be respected, a pillar of democracy in Romania. However, we must also bear in mind that these reforms are absolutely necessary and have extremely serious financial consequences for Romania's budget. If this postponement continues and the decision keeps being delayed, we will lose hundreds of millions of euros, and Romania today can scarcely afford the luxury of losing non-repayable European funds," Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna said while attending the inauguration of a defence industry production facility in Petresti, Dambovita County.

The Constitutional Court of Romania has once again postponed until 18 February the referral submitted by the High Court of Cassation and Justice regarding the Bolojan Government's new draft law on the reform of magistrates' pensions, Constitutional Court officials told AGERPRES on Wednesday. This is the fifth time the constitutional judges have delayed a ruling in this case.
