Romania's resident population was 22.178 million people as of July 1, 2018, down 0.1pct from July 1, 2017, with a majority of it dwelling in urban areas (56.4pct), according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Monday.
According to INS, the female population makes up 51.2pct.
On July 1, 2018, the urban population was 12.507 million, down slightly from July 1, 2017 (0.04pct).
The female population on July 1, 2018 was standing at 11.347 million, down 0.1pct from the same date the year before.
Population aging accelerated from July 1, 2017, with a slight decrease in the share of young people (0-14 years) and an increase by 0.3 percentage points in the share of the elderly (65 years old and over).
The aging index rose from 109.2 on July 1, 2017, to 112.1 elderly per 100 young people on July 1, 2018.
The average age of the population was 41.4 years, 0.2 years higher than on July 1, 2017. The median age was 41.4 years, increasing by 0.4 years from July 1, 2017.
On July 1, 2018, the largest share of the total population was falling in the 40-44 age group (8.5pct). Among men, the weight of this age group was 8.9pct, while among women it was 8.1pct.
The weight of the 0-4 year group was 4.6pct, less than in the 5-9 years (4.9pct) and 10-14 years group (5.1pct).
